Sunkissed Skin + Hair Care

Summertime means hot weather, sunshine and lots of beach days for us! Proper skin and hair care is essential for the warmer months of summertime, in order to keep that glow while maintaining health! Skin and hair both need extra hydration and antioxidant support when out in the sun. I drink at least 2 – 3 liters of fresh water daily, as well as fruit / veggie pressed juices and herbal teas. How else can you care for your skin to keep it glowing and radiant and healthy during the summer?

Keeping your skin protected with sunglasses, hat and coverup are all super important, as is the proper SUNBLOCK. I really never ever use sunSCREEN because the chemicals are not good for the body and not tested for long-term safety. SunBLOCK with a natural, non-nano Zinc is the way to go for sun protection. A little sun exposure is actually beneficial to the body because it provides Infrared light and allows the body to create the all important Vitamin D (a form that cannot be gained with supplementation.) Only about 15 minutes of sun exposure on the back and shoulders (without block) in the off hours of sunlight is needed to gain the benefits. So, keep your face and chest protected 100% of the time that you’re out in the sun, do not overdo it and be sure to have sunblock that contains zinc. When your skin starts to feel hot and pinks up evvvveeeeeer so slightly, seek shade or protective clothing.

If you’ve overdone it in the sun, however, there are some things you can do to help your skin recover quickly. I love making this post sun spray and use it all the time just because it’s cooling and refreshing:

Post Sun Spray

4 OZ Distilled Water

10 drops Lavender essential oil

10 drops Peppermint essential oil

Add all to a 4OZ metal or glass spray bottle and shake before using. Spray on the body, anywhere it’s needed. Avoid face and eye area if using peppermint. For face, use lavender essential oil only.

It’s also really important to stay hydrated after too much sun. The more you hydrate, the faster your skin will recover.

Both my daughter and I have long hair so when we go to the beach or pool we like to prep with some conditioner and mermaid spray. Side note: this combo is amazing post shower or bathtime for combing out long hair without tears! Spray these two recipes on damp hair then braid or bun it while out in the elements to keep hair coated and protected!

Skincare:

In the morning, I cleanse with one of two cleansers: Laurel WPO Normal Dry Cleanser (Honey and oil based and really gentle.) or Hauschka’s Cleansing Milk (gentle cleanser with clay for clearing without stripping.) I never ever use foaming cleansers on my face because they strip the oils on the surface that maintain precious balance and tend to dry the skin. Soap on the pits, privates, hands and feet. Gentle non-foaming cleansers on the face and neck.Just water on the rest!

I am also really loving this Living Libations Rose Glow Cream. It’s completely clean and plant-powered with aloe, rose, and so many other wonderfully hydrating ingredients. Most lotions and creams contains synthetic fillers and petroleum based waxes, which make them feel luxurious but weight down the skin and clog pores. I love Laurel WPO Transform Daily Balm as my staple. But this Rose Cream is really lovely for the warmer summer days! I use it every morning on damp skin.

I love to spoil my skin with Sea Buckthorn Oil because it is super high in Vitamin C and Omegas. I add in some Frankincense essential oil and slather all over my face, neck and body daily (usually at night before bed!) Frankincense is known for its supportive benefits and wonderful for keeping skin looking young. For more information on essential oils and how I use them, send me a message or visit the OILS page!
